WWE Draft 2019 took place from Friday, 11th October to Monday 14th October. In case you are unfamiliar with the concept, the Draft sees several WWE Raw Superstars moving to WWE Smackdown and vice versa. This basically happens once a year (with the exception of this year as it happened twice in 2019). Although several huge adjustments were made to both the Raw and Smackdown rosters, that doesn’t mean everything fell into place. Several things didn’t go right. We will be discussing 5 of those here and whether the next big event WWE Crown Jewel will be affected or not.
#5 Daniel Bryan Moves to Smackdown:
Ever since Daniel Bryan came back from retirement last April, he has been competing on WWE Smackdown. He has had matches with the likes of Jeff Hardy, AJ Styles, Brock Lesnar etc. When the latest edition of Draft was announced, it was thought that Bryan would be heading over to Raw. This could have freshened things up for him.
However, it didn’t happen and Bryan ended up staying on Smackdown. The former leader of Yes Movement is now in an interesting position. If you follow WWE, you must know that Smackdown now has Brock Lesnar, Cain Velasquez, Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman on the show. In their presence, it could be a long time before we can see Bryan competing for the WWE Championship. On WWE Raw, Bryan could have easily found his way to the top of the card.
#4 Rey Mysterio Moves to Raw:
Like Daniel Bryan, Rey Mysterio will not be switching brands. He will continue performing on the Raw brand. The master of 619 is at that point in his wrestling career where it doesn’t matter where he performs. However, his alliance with Mixed Martial Artist turned Professional Wrestler Cain Velasquez says otherwise.
A couple of weeks ago, Brock Lesnar attacked Rey Mysterio and his son. This beatdown angle paved the way for Cain to make his WWE debut to avenge his friend. With Lesnar staying on Smackdown, chances are that Cain will also sign with the Blue Brand. However, he needs the assistance of Mysterio during his initial days. So, Mysterio going to Raw in WWE Draft 2019 wasn’t a wise decision on WWE’s part.
#3 Bray Wyatt Moves to Smackdown:
Bray Wyatt or The Fiend has been a hot topic for the past two months. Prior to the Draft, he was a part of Raw. Moreover, he was doing pretty fine there so drafting him to Smackdown wasn’t needed. However, WWE proceeded with the move anyway.
With WWE claiming to keep the Raw and Smackdown Brands distinct after the draft, the decision to move Wyatt to Smackdown can go against their claims. As we all know, Wyatt/Fiend will be challenging Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship at WWE Crown Jewel later this month. So, it is quite odd for WWE to promote the draft as a big deal and then have a Smackdown Superstar challenge for Raw’s Top Championship.
#2 Bobby Lashley Moves to Raw:
For the past year and a half, WWE fans have been requesting for a Bobby Lashley vs. Brock Lesnar match. Both athletes have worked as professional wrestlers and Mixed Martial Artists so it’s a dream collision that we would like to see. Despite being on the same brand (WWE Raw) for 18 months, the two never crossed paths.
If that wasn’t disappointing enough, both were moved to different shows during WWE Draft 2019. Lashley ended up staying on Raw and Lesnar hopped over to WWE Smackdown. With Fox (Smackdown’s new home) demanding more sports-like feel, a Superstar like Bobby Lashley could have been an ideal pick for their show.
#1 Kofi Kingston Moves to Smackdown:
2019 has been spectacular so far for Kofi Kingston. He reigned as the WWE Champion for almost 6 months (April to October). It was evident that he would be dropping the title once Lesnar arrived on Smackdown. However, if the company was really interested in continuing his push as a solo performer, he should have been moved to Raw during the most recent edition of Draft. This would have given him many opportunities as a singles superstar.
However, WWE announced that Kingston will be staying on Smackdown. Now, he is back in the mid-card along with the rest of his The New Day stable-mates. At WWE Crown Jewel, he will be competing in a tag team turmoil match. All of these things clearly point towards the fact that Kingston’s main-event run has ended.
