Prime Minister chaired a climate change meeting, held on Friday in which they have discussed about making 30% electric cars in Pakistan by 2030. Prime Minister’s adviser on Climate change, Malik Amin Aslam addressed the meeting in which he said that smoke emitting vehicles are the main cause of pollution in big cities.
He briefed the meeting on electric vehicles, saying that this introduction will increase the business opportunities in Pakistan and reduce the oil imports as well.
He told the media that by the end of 2030, 30% of the road vehicles will be upgraded to electric vehicles in Pakistan.
Electric Car is a Pollution Reduction Strategy
Adviser further said that the world is moving towards technology and we need to move towards this alternative source of bringing electric vehicles to our country in order to reduce the oil consumption and reduce pollution. This will be helpful for Pakistan as the use of technology will cut oil demand and we can save around 2 billion annually. This will minimize the pollution level by 70%.
Moreover, the strategy to control the smog level was also discussed in the meeting and it was informed that the Punjab Green Development Programme is working on this issue.
The adviser, Malik Amin Aslam said that the plan of electric cars will definitely lessen the dependency on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas stations. Most of the winter season, these stations have faced shut down due to gas closure. In Punjab, these gas stations may be converted into charging docks for electric cars in future.
In Punjab during winters, crop burning should be prohibited in order to reduce and overcome the smog issues. The government has planned to purchase the crop waste so that they would sell it to industrial units.
Vehicle in Pakistan may go electric but this will take some time. However, automobile manufacturing companies in China are currently making electric cars due to their higher demand. Pakistan can take assistance in electric infrastructure from China like other electric companies BAIC group, GAC group, SAIC Motor.
Government of Pakistan is trying hard to reduce the pollution level, particularly in Punjab and “Green Rickshaw” project is one of them.
Whereas, in order to complete this goal by 2030 to make 30% electric vehicles, certain proposals are in line. Green Sukuk, Forest Bonds and Chinese project named Green Fund are under consideration for financial resource allocation.
